and fairly regularly, the car is being parted out because of a broken timing belt. But I can't recall even one car I parted, where the timing belt just broke on it's own. As I recall, it has always been because a bearing in one of the timing components (tensioner, water pump, etc) froze up. With 5k miles, & 5 years, I wouldn't even consider changing it. The bearings are all good, & in my experience, it's frozen bearings that are usually the killer. The most recent is a 98 Audi A4 quattro, with the 30 valve 2.8 v6. On that one, the idler pulley bearing (in the timing system) was totally gone, & the water pump bearing was virtually frozen up at the same time. So, 2 simultaneous timing system bearing failures at the same time.
